UPDATE 12/28/2022

 

Sorry to say that we had a 2 ½ inch pipe burst in the church attic on Monday.  The pipe has been fixed, Peerless has been cleaning and drying, Zach Luka and members of his crew from KLH Homes have been working to prevent further damage.  Water made its way into various locations (not the Sanctuary).  The main damage was done to the Narthex, and this will certainly require extensive remodeling in the future.  We request your prayers as we clean up and move forward.  Please ask that the Lord will guide all things and make provision for us to continue with all that we do here at Pilgrim. 

 

We will still have our New Year’s Eve Service on Saturday at 7 p.m. and our normal Sunday services (8 and 10:45) with Sunday School and Bible Class this weekend.  If for any reason that changes, we will let you know as soon as possible.

Also, for those of you who may have not heard, it is truly with deepest sorrow and joy to inform you that our beloved Pilgrim Office Manager, Patti, was taken into eternal life this last Friday morning. The sorrow because she will be greatly missed after these many years of friendship and service. The extreme joy because she is forever home in the unending, unchanging love and joy of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Praise God for her wonderful faith in our Lord Jesus Christ!

As many of you know Kay, our Youth Director, underwent an unexpected emergency surgery this week and will have to remain in the hospital for further observation to avoid infection. 

 

She thanks you for your love and prayers for her and is very upset that we have to cancel the program.

UPDATE 6/11/2021

Dear Pilgrim Brothers and Sisters,

We are very pleased to announce that on June 20 we will be returning to our old Sunday morning schedule! 

8:00     Early Service

9:30     Sunday School and Adult Bible Class

10:45   Late Service

No more sign-ups on Monday mornings!  

Also, there will be coffee, tea, milk, and donuts offered between the first service and Sunday School and Bible Class hour!  Both Adult Bible Classes will pick up where they left off.

During this time of transition, we will return to communion at the altar.  For the time being, a Pastor will distribute the host in your hand, and we will be using only individual cups.

Online services will continue as they have been, but there will no longer be online Bible Class.  Radio broadcasts will continue at WSOY 1340, after the 9 a.m. news on Sundays.

We are very grateful to our Lord Jesus Christ that what began as flattening the curve for a few weeks appears now to be over, and we can begin to move forward.  We trust that He has used all things for the good of His kingdom as he has promised in Scripture, and we are anticipating what is ahead in our loving Lord and Savior Jesus who died and rose for us!

May the Lord God continue to bless and guide us in all things to the glory of His Name!

UPDATE 5/14/2021

Dear Pilgrim Brothers and Sisters,

As many of you already know, Illinois has entered the “bridge” phase, which is before what Illinois is calling “Phase 5.”  What this means for us is that we may increase our seating capacity.  Barring another surge of infections, or a downturn in other reopening metrics, Pritzker will allow the state to fully reopen June 11.  On the Illinois corona virus website, Phase 5 is partially defined in this way: “All sectors of the economy reopen with new health and hygiene practices permanently in place.  Large gatherings of all sizes can resume.”

On Thursday, May 13, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the CDC, announced the following during a White House briefing: “Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing.”

This raises the question, “Who are fully vaccinated?”  According to the CDC,

“In general, people are considered fully vaccinated:

• 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
• 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine

If you don’t meet these requirements, regardless of your age, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Keep taking all precautions until you are fully vaccinated.”

The CDC also states: “Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.”

For Pilgrim, those who are NOT fully vaccinated are required by the CDC to continue to wear masks and maintain social distancing at 6 feet and continue with the precautions already in place. Pilgrims who ARE fully vaccinated are no longer required by the CDS to wear masks or socially distance themselves.  This is in effect starting this Sunday, May 16^th.

Now that our capacity limit has been expanded, our new Sunday morning schedule will begin on May 23^rd, and is the following:

8             Service

9:15       Sunday School and Adult Bible Class

10           Service

11:15     Adult Bible Class

Please continue to sign up for Services and Bible Classes as you have been doing so on Monday mornings starting at 8 a.m.  Also, we will continue to be on the radio and online. 

Finally, if Governor Pritzker allows the state to full open on June 11, we will have no capacity limits, and if there are no new permanent health or hygiene practices that inhibit us from doing so, we will reopen Sundays to our pre-covid schedule on Sunday, June 20.

We thank you for your understanding and patience as we are striving to do the best we can under the circumstances.  Please keep in mind that things are fluid right now and subject to governmental change.  We also are subject to insurance requirements.  We continue to monitor the situation.

May the Lord Jesus Christ and his gospel of forgiveness be your comfort and hope!  We give Jesus thanks and praise that he has rescued us from our sin, this unbelieving world, death, and the devil to bring us into his great and glorious kingdom where the old order of things will pass away!

Update 4/15/2021

Dear Pilgrim Brothers and Sisters,

Some of you have already heard that Beth has tested positive for Covid.  She is doing great with few symptoms.  Lucas is fully recovered.  I have been tested twice and continue to be negative, but will remain under self-quarantine. 

Onsite Sunday services and adult Bible class will continue under Pastor Bill for the next two Sundays (April 18^th and 25^th), and there will be onsite Sunday School for the kids.  Also, onsite Midweek (with the exception of 8^th grade confirmation) will resume on Wednesday, April 21^st.

Dear Pilgrim Brothers and Sisters,

Our Custodian, Lucas, has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently at home recuperating with no complications so far.   Thank you for your prayers in advance. 

Sadly, we will not be able to have onsite services and classes on Sunday, April 11^th or Midweek School on April 7^th or 14^th since staff and pastors have been exposed.  Midweek 8^th grade confirmation class will be meeting through Zoom from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the Wednesdays of the 7^th and the 14^th.  There will be an online Sunday service for April 11^th.  However, we will not be able to have online Bible Class this week.

Without going into all of the details, at this moment, it remains to be seen if we will be able to have onsite services and classes on April 18^th.   We are hoping to do so.  We will announce whether or not on Saturday, April 10^th through our website, Facebook, and prayer chain so that people may sign up on Monday morning if we can.

Words can hardly express how difficult it was to cancel Easter Services and Classes.  We are very grateful for your understanding, especially while seeing that many “others out there” are not consistent in applying the state, federal, and insurance guidelines.

We need to let you know that we were informed that a non-member of Pilgrim was tested positive for Covid-19, and this non-member was around staff and pastors.  This non-member has NOT been at any of our Services or Bible classes.

It is with heavy hearts that we are required to cancel our onsite Sunday Easter Services, Bible Classes, and Sunday School. 

Our online Sunday Easter Service and Adult Bible Class will be available later today through the Pilgrim Website on the “Cancellations” page.  Also, you can listen to the Sunday service and sermon on the radio (1340 WSOY AM) after the 9 a.m. news and weather.

Sunday Services, Bible Class and Sunday School, and Midweek Classes are cancelled until further notice.  The Office is closed.  However, 8^th grade confirmation class will be meeting through Zoom on Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Finally, we intend to give you further updates when they arise through the Prayer Chain, Facebook, and our “Cancellations” page on our website:  https://www.pilgrimlutherandecatur.org/

Again, we are terribly disappointed that we are not able to have onsite Easter together, but we would rather be safe than potentially endanger fellow Pilgrims.

3/3/2021

We need to let you know that we were told today (Wednesday, March 3) that a member of Pilgrim tested positive for COVID-19 and had attended the 8 o’clock service and 9:15 Bible Class on Sunday, February 28^th.  This member has been told to contact and inform anyone at Pilgrim where there might have been extended contact within six feet.

For those who attended all the other services and Bibles class, please keep in mind that both Sanctuary and All-Purpose Room were disinfected in between use.

Sunday Services, Bible Class and Sunday School, and Midweek Classes are cancelled until further notice.  The Office is closed.

We still intend to have an online Sunday Service and Bible Class for this coming Sunday.  Also, you can listen to the service and sermon on the radio (1340 WSOY AM) after the 9 a.m. news and weather.

We are sorry for any inconvenience and fear that this may cause.  We are very grateful that we have been extremely diligent in taking every precaution for this possibility.

UPDATE NEW YEARS SERVICE

We are sorry that our decision not to read the names of Pilgrims who have passed this last year has been interpreted as dishonoring their memory.  Perhaps our saying that the service will be abbreviated has led some to think that we don’t have the time read their names.  Neither is the case.  Privacy is the issue.

Despite the fact that the obituaries are online, we felt that there would be some who would not want names mentioned in the service online.  In the past, we have been rebuked for praying for people in regular services without family permission.  We have been so pressed for time during the Christmas Season that we didn’t even think to contact the families to get their permission.

We will contact the families and re-record the service.  If we are unable to track down family members, their names will not be mentioned in the internet service.

Since we will not be having an in-person New Year’s Eve Service, we will be posting one online.  It will be available for you to watch on Thursday, December 31^st at 12 noon.  Since we are posting it online, it will be abbreviated and will not list the names of Pilgrims who have gone on to glory in this past year.

Dear Pilgrims,

Lift your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner, but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.  (Is. 51:6),

It’s obvious, isn’t it?  This world is well on the way to the last moment.  Wearing out!  Will vanish like smoke!

God’s righteousness is granted to us through faith in Christ.  His salvation for His people “will be forever.”  Once again, the Advent Season will impress upon us the wonders of God’s love in Christ.

We will continue with the three services and Bible studies on Sunday.  Remember to call for a reservation.   For those who will remain at home, the services will continue on-line and on the radio.  There will be information to follow concerning Christmas.

UPDATE 11/17/2020

Dear Pilgrim Brothers and Sisters,

As many of you know, the Macon County Health Department is asking churches to be virtual at least through January 15 as Covid-19 cases continue to rise.  Meanwhile, nothing has changed on the Illinois Department of Public Health website regarding faith-based organizations.

Since June, we have been offering in-person services with the highest possible regard for safety.  We have been following the Illinois Department of Health guidelines for faith-based organizations.  Also, our members have been incredibly cooperative and have been very careful to abstain from coming to church when they do not feel well.  They follow all the rules when they are here.  We have not had a known incident where someone with Covid-19 has attended any of our services or classes.

Consequently, we have decided to continue to hold our in-person services and classes unless something indicates that we should do otherwise.  So, nothing will change with what we are presently doing.

We will monitor the situation in Macon County and in our own parish.  We will for now refrain from expanding our in-person opportunities.

For those of you who would like to give thanks to God for his gifts, especially for the forgiveness of sins in the blood of Jesus, we will be offering an online Thanksgiving service in which you will be able to find on our PLC website.  We will not be conducting in-person or online Midweek Advent services due to logistics.

Again, everything else will continue as it has since June.  To repeat what we have repeatedly said, it is recommended by many public guidelines that people who are older, or who have medical conditions should avoid a congregate setting.  You are not sinning against God if you choose not to come, nor will your pastors be hurt or think less of you.  Again, there is no reason why you should feel guilty if you choose not to attend.  Go with your “gut,” while understanding that there are no guarantees in Scripture that church going Christians are immune from catching COVID-19 and dying.

Beloved, we pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your souls!  We send you our love and prayers in Christ, who shed his blood, died, and rose from the dead and ascended into heaven that we might rise and live with him in his eternal kingdom!
